AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at how the city of York has managed flood events through a flood alleviation scheme following the 2015 floods.

There is a pre-populated retrieval practice starter grid at the beginning of the lesson.

We begin by looking at the location of York, the students have some words fragments to help them write a description. We then look at the existing hard and soft engineering defences that were in place in 2015. We then examine the events of 2015. The students create timeline of events on by number the statements on their worksheet and then categorise the impacts of the floods into social, economic and environmental. They can further categorise into primary and secondary effects. They then watch two short video clips of the floods and flood defences and answer questions on a sheet. We then look at the upgrades to the city’s flood defences and the students complete an exercise where they match the improvement to the description and then onto the picture. There is also a 9-mark GCSE-style practice question with some guidance for the students on how to complete it.

Hope this saves you some valuable planning time.
