The March on Washington – Differentiated Informational Texts & Comprehension Activities (Ages 10–14)

Teach the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom with two carefully leveled informational texts and a full suite of comprehension and assessment activities, designed to work seamlessly across mixed-ability classes.

Students explore racial segregation and economic discrimination in 1960s America, the coalition of organizers behind the march, nonviolent protest strategy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech, and the march’s direct impact on landmark civil rights legislation — including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Topics connect naturally to citizenship, democracy, human rights, and the history of the United States.
