An engaging matching activity designed to help learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE – Español como Lengua Extranjera) practise basic conjunctions and sentence-building skills.

Students must match three parts of each sentence – the beginning, the conjunction (highlighted in blue), and the ending – to form complete, meaningful sentences.

This resource follows the CEFR (MCER) and the Instituto Cervantes Curriculum (PCIC) guidelines for level A1. It’s ideal for consolidating how to connect ideas and create simple compound sentences in Spanish.

Learning objectives:

  • Practise the most common A1-level Spanish conjunctions: y, o, pero, porque, así que, cuando, para + infinitivo.
  • Understand how conjunctions link ideas in simple sentences.
  • Develop sentence-building and reading comprehension skills.

Activity overview:

  • Learners must find the three correct parts of each sentence to build a logical and grammatically correct phrase.
    For example:
    • Me gusta el café (pero) no el té.
  • Quiero aprender español (porque) quiero viajar a México.*

How to use this resource:

  • Print and cut out the sentence parts for a fun, hands-on matching activity.
  • Encourage learners to create new sentences by replacing one conjunction with another (e.g. swap porque for así que).

Skills: Reading comprehension, sentence building, speaking practice
Mode: Individual, pair, or group work

Includes:

  • 10 base sentences divided into three parts
    • Conjunctions highlighted in blue
  • Answer key
