Help children become more independent, confident and resilient mathematical thinkers with this engaging Mathematical Thinking Mat.

Designed to support children when they become stuck, the mat encourages them to pause, reflect and choose a strategy before immediately asking an adult for help.

Children are prompted to consider a range of mathematical thinking strategies, including:

  • Choosing the correct operation
  • Drawing a bar model, diagram or picture
  • Using a multiplication square or 100 square
  • Talking through their thinking with a partner
  • Recalling what they already know
  • Breaking a problem into smaller steps
  • Asking themselves useful questions

The mat promotes problem-solving, reasoning, resilience and independence, helping children develop the confidence to approach unfamiliar mathematical challenges.

Linked to the principles of the Curriculum for Wales, including developing ambitious, capable learners and supporting the Mathematics and Numeracy Area of Learning and Experience, while remaining fully transferable to KS2 classrooms across the UK.

Perfect for:

  • Maths lessons
  • Problem-solving activities
  • Reasoning challenges
  • Independent learning
  • Intervention groups
  • Maths working walls
  • Desk mats

A simple visual tool to help children think before they ask:

“What can I try next?”
