Reasoning and explaining (three days).
Children find solutions for magic squares (the central number is given to help). They find equivalent calculations to put into a calculator whose 5 button is broken, using their knowledge of how addition and subtraction work. This knowledge is also used to find mystery numbers whose totals and products are given. Children are encouraged to explain their reasoning through all activities.
