A series of multiplication challenges ranging from 11 questions to 99, increasing in difficulty (Two sets). The idea is to ‘pass’ one level before attempting the next and to complete the questions within a time limit (guideline 5 mins) A once a week attempt is recommended.

Aims and Objectives
 To recall times-tables and number facts at speed.
 To use known number facts to solve a variety of calculations.
 To present work clearly and neatly.
 To solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems mentally.
 To work within a time limit.
 To check answers for careless mistakes.

Administration

Children should all begin on the 11s on the level appropriate to their year group. If they have done number club in the previous year they can continue from where they left off but if the level is not known it’s fine just to start on the next club for their year.

The challenge should be strictly timed at 5 minutes (KS1 10mins). No extra time is allowed. If a child finishes early they must check their answers and wait in silence for the end of the challenge.

Sheets must be marked by the teacher. No peer marking.

A pass is only given if every single question is completed correctly within the given time. Poor handwriting and unclear answers should be marked wrong.

If a pass is awarded, the child moves on to the next level the following week.

If a pass is not awarded, the child repeats the same level the following week.

Recording

Each child’s name should be written on the record sheet in your file. If they do not pass, nothing need be recorded. If they do pass, the date should be written in the corresponding box.

Special Circumstances
Some children may be unable to access the number club allocated to their year group. For these children, you may want to use a number club for the previous year group (or earlier). Please discuss these children with the Maths co-coordinator or learning support teacher before deciding where to start them.
Most children will not complete the entire number club within the school year. Ideally, the majority will reach their 66s. However, in the event that a child passes their 99s, they should be presented with a certificate in assembly.
