A hands-on activity to demonstrate how Evolution occurs by Natural Selection.
Also shows how the process of Adaptation happens - ie. to populations, not individuals. Ideal for KS2 Evolution topic.
A population of bugs is subjected to different environmental pressures (chosen by throwing dice) and the children work out which bugs would have survived in each scenario.
Over time, Adaptive Features within the population of bugs are seen to change in response to the environment. This provides a very clear visual illustration of evolution happening in real time.
This is a group activity.
It can be re-run to produce different outcomes and, hence, prompt further discussion.
Included: sheets of bugs to print off, powerpoint or printed instructions, teacher notes. Needs: dice.
Keywords: KS2 Evolution. KS2 Adaptation. Natural Selection.
