This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Physics GCSE, particularly the ‘Electromagnetism’ SoW.

The lesson begins with a question to get students thinking about what sort of appliances electric motors are used in. After a short discussion, the slide reveals a set of pictures of difference appliances, such as blenders, hairdryers where electrical motors are used.
The next slide displays a diagram of a set of apparatus, where a current-carrying wire is passed through a magnetic field, and the motor effect is described. Students will now watch a video, and whilst watching they will answer a set of questions about the motor effect. The answers to this task are included in the PowerPoint presentation.
The next part of the lesson explains how the size of the force with the motor effect can be increased, and students are introduced to the equation for magnetic flux density. Students will be shown a worked example for this calculation, and then will be given a set of questions to answer on magnetic flux density. The answers to this task are included in the PowerPoint so students can assess their work once complete. Students will then complete a progress check on what they have learned so far in the lesson, by completing a ‘True or False’ activity.
The last part of the lesson introduces and explains the action of a split-ring commutator to students. Then, students will complete a summary worksheet on the topic of the lesson, and the mark scheme to this task are included so they can either self-assess or peer-assess their work.
The plenary task is for students to write three facts, three key words and one question to test their peers.
