No Pens Day lessons are a fantastic way to spice things up a little in the classroom for every learner - with minimum additional resources needed. These lessons are also a lovely and inclusive way to do something a little differently in order to appeal to neurodivergent learners who struggle with the formality of normal day-to-day schooling.

This lesson focuses on measuring both perimeter and area using centimetres. Students are taught how to calculate the perimeter and area of both regular and irregular shapes before testing their understanding by following instructions to design a zoo. Animals need different sized enclosures, and in order to ensure that no pens are used in this lesson, children will need to cut out enclosures to the right size using the squared paper, and then label by sticking the correct animal picture on top.

This pack contains:

  • Detailed Maths lesson plan
  • Teaching Input Powerpoint (15 slides)
  • Answer Key included for teaching input
  • Pictures of animals to be used as labels

Additional resources needed:

  • A3 paper
  • Squared paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks

*** ALSO AVAILABLE at a less challenging level for KS1 measuring length and for LKS2 measuring perimeter ***
