Explores Disney’s horizontal integration, ownership of Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm and 21st Century Studios, and how this gives Disney market power. Students apply key terms such as subsidiary, oligopoly, Big 5, synergy and cross-platform marketing to Shang-Chi. Includes a supporting article on Disney cross-platform marketing.
Lesson 3: Shang-Chi Box Office Success
Focuses on production values, CGI, VFX, budget, casting and authentic representation. Students explore how Disney/Marvel’s investment and creative choices contributed to Shang-Chi’s appeal and success, while also analysing how the film challenges stereotypes through representation and cultural authenticity. Includes two supporting articles.
Lesson 4: Shang-Chi Representation Research
A shorter, student-led research lesson where students create a presentation on key characters, actors, the director and screenwriter. Students research Shang-Chi, Wenwu, Katy, Xialing, Ying Nan, Destin Daniel Cretton and Dave Callaham, linking each to diversity and representation. Includes a separate research task document.
