These two lessons explore Chapter 1 of John Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’.
Students are encouraged to think about Steinbeck’s idyllic opening setting and how the tranquil calm of nature is shattered by the arrival of two nomadic men with a mysterious past. The lesson invites students to analyse the juxtaposition of Lennie and George and to predict what will be their fate in the rest of the novella based on the key themes introduced in this opening chapter.
Key vocabulary is introduced for describing Lennie, and we think about Steinbeck’s use of foreshadowing. There are regular opportunities for close analysis of key quotations, and an analytical writing task is included with an exemplar paragraph for pupils to study. Regular links are made to the context of the Great Depression.
The first lesson is 13 slides; the second lesson is 17 slides.
Questions, discussion points, and tasks are included for students.
Page numbers (included in the lesson titles and in quotations) are in reference to the Penguin Modern Classics edition (light blue spine).
Ideal for upper-KS3 or GCSE students.
PowerPoints are saved as PDFs.
