What is repeated addition? Is there a way to make it simpler? Get your students manipulating numbers with ease after spending time investigating repeated addition, multiplication, commutative law and part-wholes of numbers through this fun Maths counting legs book by by April Pulley Sayre and Jeff Sayre.
A fun, practical fusion of reading comprehension and Maths, the children will be super engaged with this lesson as it challenges them to think of the multiple different ways you can make up a number. The lesson and tasks are differentiated so that they can be used for all ages from Kindergarten to 5th Grade. The open-ended nature of the math story problems also allow for the children to self-differentiate as they go - e.g. 20 could simply be 2 crabs… OR it could be a person walking a dog, two insects and two snails… The possibilities are almost endless!
The KS1 lesson looks at multiplication, repeated addition and the commutative law.
The LKS2 lesson looks at problems involving multiplication and addition.
The UKS2 lesson looks at problems involving multiplication and addition, plus the an introduction to expressing these number sentences using algebraic formulae.
The students’ creative outcome is to create their own counting legs book set somewhere other than the beach, with a worksheet to help them story plan.

This is one of my favourite books! Seems like a book for younger children but there is SO much you can do with the older kids too - thanks for the ideas!
I delivered this lesson to a year 2 class and they absolutely loved it. Thanks!
