Teach Robert Frost’s powerful and unsettling poem Out, Out— with this ready-to-use lesson designed for Edexcel IGCSE English Language A (4EA1). While created with the Paper 2 examination route in mind, the resource would also work well for students studying for the Paper 3 Poetry & Prose coursework route.
This lesson explores Frost’s presentation of mortality, childhood, fate and the fragility of life, while developing students’ ability to analyse language, structure and writer’s methods in preparation for Paper 2. The lesson also introduces students to the poem’s fascinating intertextual connection with Shakespeare’s Macbeth, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the title and Frost’s wider message.
The lesson sequence includes:
- Starter activity exploring the title Out, Out— and generating predictions
- Contextual introduction to Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the famous “Out, out, brief candle!” speech
- Discussion of intertextuality and why writers deliberately reference other texts
- Brief contextual overview of Robert Frost and his key themes
- First reading activities focusing on initial responses and interpretation
- Language analysis task exploring the personification of the buzz saw and Frost’s presentation of the accident
- Character-focused analysis examining the boy’s emotional response and lost future
- Structure analysis task tracking changes in mood, pace and focus throughout the poem through the use of table (provided)
- Detailed exploration of the pivotal line “And nothing happened: day was all but done”
- Scaffolded exam-style analytical writing task
- Model paragraph demonstrating effective language and structure analysis
- Plenary discussion returning to the poem’s relationship with Macbeth and Frost’s view of life
