A great lesson to use for an observation, I have planned this mobile phone contracts investigation to grab slightly older children's attention and demonstrate to them why maths is relevant and worthwhile, to avoid being ripped off in the future.
Children must read through the contract details for each handset and then work out which one-year contract is the cheapest and which is the most expensive. When I have taught this lesson all children have been rapt, even 'those girls' in the corner who never concentrate! 'THOSE' girls couldn't get enough of this lesson and having taught it to Year 5 and 6 I know it is easy to adapt to suit all ability groups.
The lesson is intended to teach children to be able to work through:
- multi-step word problems
- percentate increases/decreases
- all four operations
- working with money
- creating graphs
