This resource is a set of 4 lessons designed to teach painting skills to Lower Key Stage 2, though it could be used for KS1 too. The key skills that are taught include mixing colours to create secondary colours, creating different tones and shades and using shapes and patterns to change the tone of a painting.
There are 3 different artists used as inspiration - Mondrian, who uses blocks of colour, Monet, who uses lots of tones and shades and Rembrandt, whose painting of Jesus calming the storm is used to inspire the children’s final pieces of work. The children have the opportunity to work alone and as part of a large group to create a collaborative piece of art on gigantic wallpaper. This was great fun! I have included the powerpoint I used for the series of lessons. There are 3 slides on the first two artists and a slide with Rembrandt’s picture.
I have used these plans on several occasions so they are tried and tested!
