Help pupils connect a growing diagram to an nth-term rule, using the structure of each diagram. This editable Year 10 Maths Foundation PowerPoint uses L-shaped tiles, crosses, rectangular arrangements and joined matchstick squares to make changing and fixed parts visible. Project the lesson and keep pupils working in exercise books or on mini whiteboards without photocopied worksheets.

FROM DIAGRAMS TO ALGEBRA
Pupils count tiles or sticks, identify what changes, write position-to-term rules and use them to calculate later terms. They also work backwards to find a pattern number and explain when a requested total is impossible. Colour distinguishes growing tiles from fixed tiles, helping pupils explain each part of their rule.

WHAT IS INCLUDED
• One editable 70-slide PowerPoint with questions and answers.
• Six retrieval questions and six prerequisite checks, each with grouped answers.
• Key vocabulary supported by a pattern diagram.
• A compact I Do / We Do page with three matched pairs and space for teacher working.
• Six worked modelling solutions linking diagrams, rules and calculations.
• Twenty individual AFL questions, each immediately followed by its answer.
• A 27-question practice page with three shared figures: find rules, calculate totals and identify pattern numbers.
• One-page answers for the full practice set.
• Fifteen differentiated questions across Developing, Secure and Greater Depth, plus one Super Challenge on the same slide.
• One-page differentiated answers and a separate worked challenge explanation.
• Two misconception checks with corrections.
• An original seven-mark exam-style question with worked answers.
• Three exit questions, each followed by its answer.

PRACTICE WITH PURPOSE
Shared figures let pupils answer many questions without copying each diagram. The practice asks for total, growing and fixed tile rules before applying those rules to later positions. The differentiated page uses changed dimensions and a matchstick pattern. Questions move into reverse calculations, the first total above a threshold, comparing patterns and explaining why doubling a position does not necessarily double its tile count.

REASONING BEYOND ROUTINE CALCULATION
The Super Challenge combines two separate rows of joined squares. Pupils use the total stick count to find how many squares there are, then explain what changes when the rows are joined. The solution shows why the answer depends on the combined number of squares, regardless of how they were split between the original rows.

PRINT FREE AND READY TO TEACH
All differentiated levels and the challenge remain visible together. Supplied diagrams support discussion and calculation without lengthy copying. Questions and suggested exam marks are original teaching materials, not an official examination paper.
