What’s included?
x16 landscape orientation pdf sheets for all Phase 2 phonics sounds.

What’s it for?
These activity sets are designed to practise and reinforce reading VC and CVC words using only the sounds taught in Phase 2 phonics.

Each set follows the learning order; while Set 1 only uses its introduced sounds, subsequent sets build cumulatively, incorporating sounds only from the previous sets.

Who’s it for?
This resource is for Early Years and Year 1 children learning or practising these sounds. It is also suitable for older pupils with additional learning needs who require reinforcement.

How to use it?
For a more durable resource, print these onto card instead of paper. Laminate and use a wipe clean pen to re-use word cards.

Preparing the Word Cards

• Cut out each card along the dotted lines.
• Place the word cards flat on a table/desk top.

How to Use the Word Cards
Learners look at the image and say the word. Learners then sound out the word and write the graphemes on the word card. They can then check if they were correct by looking at answers sheet included, designed for learners can use themselves promoting autonomy.

Resource Details…
Red (Set 1)
Includes words which only contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, as follows:

• sap
• ant
• tap and tin
• pan and pin
• i in tin and pin
• n in ant at the end of tin, pin and pan

Orange (Set 2)
Includes words which contain the sounds m, d, g, o, c, k as well as p and i (from Set 1), as follows:

• mop and mog (a word meaning ‘cat’)
• dog
• cog, cod (type of fish)
• kid (baby goat)
• g in mog, dog and cog
• o in mop, mog, dog, cog and cod

Yellow (Set 3)
Includes words which contain the sounds ck, e, u, r, h, b as well as s and t (from Set 1) and d and o (from Set 2), as follows:

• u - up (an escalator - arrow indicates this) The only VC word included. Also at the end of duck and in hut
• r - rock and red
• h - hut
• b - bed
• ck - at the end of duck and rock
• e - in bed and red

Green (Set 4)
Includes words which contain the sounds f, ff, l, ll, ss as well as a, i and n (Set 1), g, o, c and k (Set 2) and e, b and u (Set 3), as follows:

• f - fan
• l - leg
• ff at the end of cuff (the hand end of a (shirt) sleeve)
• ll at the end of bell
• ss at the end of kiss
