Phonics Screening Check Practice Pack (Alien Words Included)

This Phonics Screening Check Practice Pack is designed to help children build confidence and familiarity with the format of the Year 1 phonics screening check.

The resource includes a clear teacher and parent guidance page explaining how the check works, why “alien words” are used, and how to administer and score the assessment effectively. It also provides simple next-step guidance based on children’s results.

You’ll also find 24 alien word cards, split into two sections:
• Section 1 (teal): shorter, simpler words
• Section 2 (purple): longer, more challenging words

Each card features a highlighted target grapheme and a unique alien character to keep children engaged while practising decoding skills.
