

What are polyesters in chemistry? Condensation polymers? Diols and dicarboxylic acids? Nylon 6 10? All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 13 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 4 – WCH14, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. The breakdown of the slides (which are best opened on Microsoft PowerPoint) is as follows:
Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time.

Slide 3 – Hinge question: how are condensation polymers formed? Answer is included, of course!
Slide 4 – Definition of a condensation reaction is presented to students, with an example equation
Slide 5 – use this slide to introduce students to the monomers involved in condensation polymerisation
Slide 6 - an explanation to help students draw the repeat unit for a condensation polymer
Slide 7 – an animation of the polymerisation reaction between ethanedioic acid and ethane-1,2-diol. Play this as fast or slow as your students need
Slides 8 – 9: Use these slides to introduce students to repeat units formed from the polymerisation of amino acids
Slides 10 – 15: an independent practice task in which students will complete a table by drawing the monomers and polymers of wide range of substances. Printouts are included on the hidden slides and the answers are also there too!
Slides 16 – 19: Nylon 6,10 focus – use this section to teach students about why dicarboxylic acids are used to make Nylon in industry, as opposed to dioyl chlorides. There is a table which can be printed for students, which has the advantages and disadvantages of each.
