This lesson covers:
•Students discuss what a series of pictures (showing plastics) have in common and draw conclusions
•Content covering addition polymerisation with an animation
•Students practice drawing the monomers, polymers and repeating units as well as naming the monomers and polymers for polyethene, polypropene, PVC, polystyrene and PTFE. Students also match thee polymers to their use based on an explanation of their structural properties
•Content covering condensation reactions with an animation followed by a task where students define, draw and compare condensation reactions
•Content covering the environmental issue with polymers
•Students to spend the core of the lesson researching and preparing a presentation as if they are an environmental government advisor based on what they have learned the previous lessons with their own knowledge and research on solutions
