3 possessive noun activities suitable for Year 6 or similar.

  1. Fill in the missing possessive nouns, both singular and plural, to practise the placement of apostrophes. The nouns are all animals and include a range of plural forms (add s, -y becomes -ies, plural form is the same as singular form as in deer, etc.) to provide varying levels of challenge, and a singular noun which ends in s (where should the apostrophe go?) Plenty of rules covered for discussion and explanation of both apostrophe use and plural formation.
  2. Children write a sentence to match the picture or draw a picture for the sentence to show they can interpret and write both singular and plural possessive nouns.
  3. Children can write the appropriate phrase on mini whiteboards, for example, before the answer is revealed. Slides test children’s ability to use apostrophes for singular and plural nouns focussing on common plurals which do not end in s such as ‘men’ and ‘women’. Further task on the final slide.
