Extend pressure calculations into algebra, reverse problems and percentage changes with a editable GCSE Higher lesson. Designed for whole-class projection, this print free PowerPoint keeps teaching, practice and answers together. Pupils respond in exercise books or on mini whiteboards, so the main activities need no printed worksheets.
The Higher pathway moves beyond substitution. Pupils convert area units, solve for algebraic dimensions and use multipliers to explain changes in pressure. They work backwards from a pressure change, compare force and area ratios, and decide whether the information given determines a unique answer.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• One editable 72-slide PowerPoint.
• Six retrieval questions and answers, plus prerequisite checks and answers.
• Definitions of force, normal force, contact area and pressure, supported by a diagram.
• Six I Do / We Do examples in three matched pairs, with space for live teacher working.
• Worked modelling solutions and a circular-contact-face example.
• Twenty individual AFL questions, each immediately followed by its answer or solution.
• A 24-question whole-class practice slide with a one-slide answer key.
• Developing, Secure, Greater Depth and one Super Challenge together on one differentiated task slide.
• A one-slide differentiated answer summary, with further worked reasoning.
• Two dedicated misconception questions with corrections and explanations.
• Three original exam-style questions with suggested marks and worked answers.
• Three final exit checks, each immediately followed by its answer.
CHALLENGE THROUGH REASONING
The Super Challenge gives a cuboid’s volume and the ratio of the pressures on its three face sizes. Pupils must determine its edge lengths and decide whether its weight can also be found. The worked solution connects inverse ratios, edge ratios and volume, then explains why the weight remains undetermined.
CHECK UNDERSTANDING THROUGHOUT
Retrieval and prerequisite checks help identify gaps before the main examples. The AFL sequence gives pupils time to respond before the answer appears. Misconception tasks ask them to diagnose and correct errors, while exam-style applications check transfer to new situations. Exit checks assess independent understanding.
PRACTICAL FOR WHOLE-CLASS TEACHING
The paired modelling layout protects teacher writing space. Shared instructions keep practice compact, and the differentiated page lets the whole class remain active on one screen. The Super Challenge has a clearly separated area. Display the answer summaries for efficient checking, then use the worked explanations for discussion where needed.
EDITABLE AND REUSABLE
Use the lesson for initial teaching, consolidation or GCSE revision.
This is the Higher pathway for Calculating with Pressure, Year 10 Unit 12, U527. Pupils should know area formulae, metric area conversions and rearrangement, square roots and percentage multipliers. Created by Beyond Printables.
