Paper Helicopter Design STEM Challenge
A hands‑on STEM challenge where learners design, build, test, and improve a paper helicopter while exploring gravity, air resistance, and simple engineering principles.
Learners cut, fold, and assemble a paper helicopter, adjust blade length or weight, and test how it spins when dropped. This low‑prep activity is ideal for primary classrooms, home learning, STEM tubs, or small‑group centres.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
• 3‑page STEM Challenge set: Cover Page, Instructions Page, Activity Page
• Built‑in data collection graph for recording test results
• Clear directions for classrooms
• Kid‑friendly layout for independent exploration
• Printable PDF (A4/Letter compatible)
SKILLS DEVELOPED:
• Engineering design process
• Predicting and testing ideas
• Observing motion and rotation
• Comparing performance after design changes
• Recording results using a simple data graph
HOW IT WORKS:
Learners build one version of their paper helicopter, drop it from a safe height, and observe how it spins. They record their results, then change one part of the design—such as blade length, added weight, or fold shape—and test again. They sketch both versions, note the change, and compare results using the activity page. The open layout supports drawings, labels, and observations.
The challenge scales naturally: younger learners create simple helicopters, while older learners explore spin speed, blade symmetry, and weight distribution.
Teachers can choose spin‑time testing, drop‑height testing, or both.
LEARNING CONCEPTS:
• Gravity and air resistance
• Rotation and balance
• Blade design and symmetry
• Testing and improving designs
• Recording simple data
Curriculum Links: Supports early engineering, forces, motion, and investigations involving falling and spinning objects.
