A psychology-informed problem-solving toolkit for children aged 8–11, designed for ELSA, SEND, pastoral and wellbeing support with everyday problems.
When a child has a problem, it can be difficult to know what to do next. They might feel stuck, jump to the first solution they can think of, or need help breaking the problem down.
This printable toolkit teaches children a simple, flexible problem-solving process for everyday situations at school, at home and with other people.
UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM. THEN EXPLORE WHAT MIGHT HELP.
Using clear visual explanations and practical activities, children learn to:
• Identify the problem
• Think of different things they could try
• Consider what might be good or tricky about each idea
• Choose something to try
• Notice what happens and adjust if needed
Children first learn the process and practise with everyday examples before applying the steps to a problem of their own. There is no expectation that there will be one “right” solution.
