A punctuation mark matching activity with three levels of differentiation.

Pupils match each card showing a punctuation mark symbol with an explanation of its use and an example sentence or sentences.

An answer sheet is included.

This activity helps pupils to remember the names of punctuation marks and how they are used. It can be used when introducing new punctuation marks to a class in lower key stage two or as a revision activity for upper key stage two (or even KS3). This activity is ideal as a starter or plenary for an English/literacy lesson or punctuation lesson.

The cards have been differentiated three ways:
• Lower ability: The example sentence displays the featured punctuation in red.
• Middle ability: The featured punctuation is missing, with its position indicated by a red rectangle.
• Higher ability: The featured punctuation is missing.

An ideal activity for pupils to carry out in pairs or small groups.

The following punctuation marks with definitions and examples are included:
• Capital letters
• Full stops
• Commas
• Question marks
• Exclamation Marks
• Apostrophes
• Inverted commas
• Brackets
• Dashes
• Colons
• Semi-colons

The cards have been organised to make it easy for teachers to reduce the selection of punctuation marks, depending on the needs of their class or individual pupils.
