Reactive or Inert? Periodic Table Elements Research Project

Get students thinking like real chemists with this engaging, ready-to-use research project. Students choose four elements — two reactive and two inert — and investigate their position in the Periodic Table, reactivity, environmental stability and real-world uses. They then compare their findings to identify patterns between reactivity and Periodic Table placement.

What is included:

  • A colourful, single-page student instruction sheet, plus a matching black-and-white version for easy printing.
  • Five scaffolded guiding questions with clear sub-prompts to support independent research.
  • An example table comparing reactive and inert elements to help students get started.
  • A detailed six-criteria marking rubric worth 24 points, with space for the student’s name, score and teacher feedback.

Why use this resource?

  • Encourages independent research and scientific enquiry.
  • Reinforces understanding of reactivity and Periodic Table trends.
  • Develops comparison, critical-thinking and evidence-based reasoning skills.
  • Encourages students to cite sources and apply their knowledge to real-world examples.
  • Suitable for independent work, homework or a lesson with minimal teacher preparation.

Suitable for: KS3 Chemistry, secondary Science, Physical Science and introductory Chemistry units on elements and the Periodic Table.
