Needing a textiles/sewing project for your advanced beginner sewers that they will actually want to use once they’ve completed it? Look no further than this Reading/TV Pocket Cushion Cover!

This is a step-by-step tutorial with photos that you and your students can follow to create a simple and fun zippered style cushion cover with a large front pocket (perfect for adding the TV remotes, snacks or books) that fits a size 18 cushion insert.

It is a great project for students because they can customise it with their own patterned fabric purchase or add their own fabric embellishments/designs if the school provides basic calico fabric for all students. While it is a simple project it does require students to insert a plastic dress zip using a zipper foot, add fusible interfacing to the pocket and front of the cushion cover, add a handle and to sew carefully over a couple of bulky sections.

Students can then use this completed project as a couch cushion for the family, in their own bedrooms or even give as a gift to a younger brother or sister.
