Teach recurring decimal notation with this editable, 63-slide Year 8 maths PowerPoint. Pupils learn to read and write recurring dots, identify repeating blocks, recognise a non-repeating start and round numbers given in recurring notation.
Designed for print-free teaching: project the questions while pupils work in exercise books or respond on mini-whiteboards. The main practice set contains 24 questions on one slide.
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
• One editable PowerPoint containing 63 slides.
• Six retrieval questions and six prerequisite questions, each with grouped answers.
• Lesson language covering terminating decimals, recurring decimals, repeating blocks, recurring dots, non-repeating starts and rounding.
• I Do/We Do modelling with worked answers.
• An additional matched set of six examples focused on reading recurring dots, arranged in three columns and two rows.
• Twenty AFL questions, each immediately followed by its answer.
• A 24-question practice page and matching answers.
• One differentiated page with eight Developing, eight Secure and five Greater Depth questions plus a Super Challenge.
• Separate answers for each section and a complete challenge solution.
MODELLING AND UNDERSTANDING
Examples distinguish a single recurring digit from a longer repeating block. Pupils identify where repetition begins and write the first seven digits after the decimal point. Examples include three-digit blocks whose first and last digits are the same, blocks containing zero and decimals with an initial non-repeating section.
ONE-PAGE PRACTICE
Four columns contain six questions each. The first moves the start of repetition while pupils write dot notation. The second changes the dot positions while keeping the displayed digits closely related. The final two columns present numbers in recurring-dot notation and ask pupils to round them to one through six decimal places. Answers include rounding up, rounding down, carrying and retaining trailing zeros to show the requested accuracy.
DIFFERENTIATED APPLICATION
Developing uses fresh decimals for writing dots and expanding recurring notation. Secure requires pupils to interpret recurring dots before rounding to a stated number of decimal places. Greater Depth asks pupils to correct misplaced dots, give different recurring decimals with the same rounded value, question what a calculator display proves, compare decimals and identify a distant digit without writing out the entire sequence.
SUPER CHALLENGE
Two decimals use the same digits but different recurring-dot positions. Pupils describe every digit pair for which the decimals round to the same value to one decimal place but different values to two decimal places. They give a rule and justify why it covers every possibility. The solution explains the rounding decisions and includes a worked example in dot notation.

Keep questions with their matching answers when adapting the lesson for a particular class. The bundles overlap: lessons also occur in the relevant subject collection and complete Year 8 collection. Check the list before buying twice. Use the presentations in sequence or select a lesson for targeted KS3 revision. Allow pupils time to explain their methods and check their answers. Print free means worksheets are not required; pupils may need exercise books, squared paper or geometry equipment for particular tasks. These are original Beyond Printables teaching resources; they are not official Sparx products or access to the Sparx platform. The lesson files are separate PowerPoints, so a teacher can locate and reopen a single topic without working through the whole bundle. Teachers can pause on a modelled example, invite a pupil explanation, then reveal and discuss the worked answer before continuing. The guided examples support this classroom routine. The independent questions are intended for written working, not just a final answer. Pupils can compare a calculation, diagram or explanation with the displayed answer and correct it. A teacher can start a lesson with retrieval, use the checks on mini-whiteboards and direct pupils to practice suited to their current understanding. The presentation can be revisited later.

For a revision lesson, select a short run of examples and practice rather than presenting every slide. For first teaching, allow more time for discussion and checking misconceptions. Where a question asks for reasoning, encourage pupils to state why the method applies. Comparing two plausible approaches can expose an error before pupils move to a new example.
