Teach reflection with an editable 86-slide Year 9 maths PowerPoint. Clear coordinate grids support reflecting shapes, finding image coordinates, identifying mirror lines and explaining why points remain fixed.
Designed for print-free teaching: project the questions while pupils work in exercise books or give short responses on mini whiteboards. Drawing tasks use pupils’ own coordinate grids.
I DO, WE DO, YOU DO
Three matched pairs develop reflections in the x-axis, horizontal lines away from the axis and the diagonal lines y = x and y = −x. The six-question I Do / We Do overview includes small diagrams and space for teacher working. Enlarged examples and worked answers follow.
Further examples cover describing reflections, fixed vertices, vertical and horizontal mirror lines and reflections in y = −x.
32 QUESTIONS ACROSS TWO PRACTICE PAGES
Each page uses a shared coordinate grid with four labelled triangles. Pupils identify images and original shapes, find image coordinates, name mirror lines, combine reflections, correct errors and explain whether a single reflection is possible. Horizontal and vertical reflections lead into diagonal reflections and reasoning about the order of transformations.
ONE-PAGE DIFFERENTIATED TASK
Six Developing questions, six Secure questions and four Greater Depth questions share one diagram. Accessible entry questions begin with reading vertices and recognising reflections in the axes. Secure questions develop reflections in offset and diagonal lines. Greater Depth explores fixed vertices, perpendicular bisectors and conditions that make two reflections produce the same image.
The Super Challenge appears on the same differentiated page. Pupils reflect a triangle in two parallel lines, reverse the order and compare the results. An enlarged challenge and worked solution extend the reasoning to any point (x, y).
CHECK UNDERSTANDING THROUGHOUT
• Six retrieval questions with grouped answers.
• Six prerequisite questions with grouped answers.
• Twenty individual mini-whiteboard AFL questions, each immediately followed by its answer.
• A coordinate grid on every AFL question, showing the given points or shapes and relevant mirror lines. Pupils give short answers without sketching a graph or reflected shape.
• Three exit checks with grids and answers.
• Answers for all practice, differentiated questions and the Super Challenge.
• Editable text, coordinate grids, points and shapes.
