Support pupils to return to school with a clear, thoughtful and supportive reintegration process.

This editable Reintegration & Return to School Toolkit provides schools with practical resources to plan, manage and review a pupil’s return following a period away from school.

Designed for pastoral, attendance, SEND, SEMH and wider pupil support, the toolkit places pupil voice, relationships and practical planning at the centre of reintegration.

It can be used to support pupils returning following suspension, extended or persistent absence, emotionally based absence, illness, placement difficulties, a significant incident or another period away from school.

Rather than focusing only on getting a pupil back through the school doors, the resources help staff consider what may make returning difficult, what the pupil and family think will help, what adults need to put in place and whether the support is working.

The toolkit follows a simple process:

Pupil facing pages use accessible, supportive questions to help pupils express how they feel about returning, what they are worried about, what helps them feel settled and what they would like adults to understand.

Professional planning pages then help staff translate those conversations into clear actions, named support, agreed adjustments and review points.

The review process also encourages schools to look beyond attendance alone and consider areas such as engagement, relationships, regulation, confidence, participation and help seeking.
