This KS2 maths lesson supports Year 3 pupils in rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. The session introduces clear strategies, including a rounding rhyme and number line modelling, helping pupils build confidence with lower KS2 place value objectives. Lesson Overview:
★ Starter: Discussion introducing the idea of rounding and when it is useful, supported by the rhyme “4 or less, let it rest. 5 or more, let it soar.”
★ Main: Guided practice using number lines to round to the nearest 10 and 100. Pupils choose differentiated tasks and work through structured examples to identify which ten or hundred a number is closest to.
★ Plenary: Pupils reflect on their learning, identify challenges and summarise key strategies used.
