
Progressive Rugby Contact Scheme of Work 6 Lessons
This six lesson rugby scheme introduces contact in a safe gradual and confidence building way. It is designed for upper KS2 and KS3 students and is suitable for non specialist teachers and students with little or no rugby experience.
Contact is introduced through fun games paired activities and small sided practices before progressing to controlled tackling and game play. There are no offsides and no backwards passing at the start. Safety confidence and enjoyment are prioritised throughout.
The scheme is designed to remove fear prevent mismatches in ability and allow all students to succeed even in mixed ability or small classes.
The six lessons progress as follows.
Lesson 1 introduces rugby through fun invasion games including Rugby Tag Piggy in the Middle and Rugby Netball. The focus is on catching passing and moving into space with no tackling.
Lesson 2 builds physical confidence using games such as Paintball Tag Possession Squares and Any Direction Touch. Students experience pressure and resistance in a safe playful way without tackling.
Lesson 3 introduces first contact skills through activities such as Knee Touch Press Up Foot Touch Knee Wrestle and the Line Out Game. Students learn body position balance and safe contact below the ball without tackling to the ground.
Lesson 4 introduces tackling to the ground in a controlled and progressive way. Students practise ball rips one step tackles falling safely and controlled side on and front on tackles. The lesson includes a choice based game allowing students to control how much contact they engage in.
Lesson 5 focuses on power contact and decision making under fatigue. Activities include Hug Battles Get Out of the Circle Escape the Squares and ‘Murder Ball’. Games are short intense and highly engaging while maintaining safe technique.
Lesson 6 consolidates learning and transfers skills into game situations. Students play Multi Directional Touch Push Out games and Rugby Netball with wrap equals turnover. Rugby now looks and feels like rugby without tackling to the ground.
Each lesson includes clear objectives equipment lists teaching points an England Rugby Activate warm up and a full set of support resources. Support materials include non doer tasks student reflection sheets teacher cheat sheets and assessment grids.
