Here’s a Valentine’s Day lesson with a meaningful, sustainability-focused learning experience for your students. It’s fun and creative and checks some of the cross-curricular boxes for Geography and English for Key Stage 2 and 3. This activity builds directly on learning from the companion resource, “Valentine’s Day Quiz - Geography Edition" which you can find in my shop. It’s a fun way to encourage students to apply geographical knowledge about global trade, waste, CO₂ emissions, cocoa production, flowers, and sustainability in a thoughtful and creative way.

Instead of focusing on romantic love, this resource encourages students to explore love for the planet, helping to develop environmental awareness, climate responsibility, and global citizenship. The students can design their own Earth-conscious Valentine’s card using the pdf template, adding drawings, symbols, and messages inspired by what they learned in the quiz. The quiz covers a multitude of things including cocoa supply chains, European flower exports, waste production, composting, and carbon emissions with a Valentines Day focus. I’ve included some example photos of before and after cards in my shop.

A key feature of the activity is the haiku, where students can compose a short poem about caring for the Earth. There’s no pressure to write a haiku so some examples are provided. This supports English curriculum objectives around poetry, vocabulary, imagery, and concise creative writing.

This resource works brilliantly as:

  1. A great follow-up activity to the Valentine’s Day Geography Quiz
  2. A standalone sustainability activity
  3. A whole-school Valentine’s Day activity focused on kindness to the planet
  4. A display task for classrooms or corridors
  5. PSHE / Citizenship crossover promoting values and responsible choices

It’s low-prep format so you can just print the card template, introduce the theme of planet-positive love, and let students create meaningful work that can be shared, displayed, or even sent home. I’ll also include a powerpoint on what a Haiku is for those students who want to take their creativity to the next level!

I like this activity because it naturally supports discussion around ethical consumption, chocolate and flower supply chains, climate change, waste, and everyday actions people can take to reduce their carbon footprint.

This will be great with the quiz. Great idea and can be used across the whole school not just for geographers.
