Help children develop their inference skills with this set of 20 short, engaging inference cards, designed specifically for Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3–4).

Each card contains a short passage followed by 4 inference questions designed to encourage children to look closely at the clues in a text, think about what they suggest and explain their ideas using evidence.

The passages cover a range of familiar and engaging situations, including animals, family life, school, friendships and everyday experiences. The short format makes the cards easy to use for quick reading activities without requiring children to work through a lengthy text.

Developing confident readers
Inference can be challenging for younger readers because they need to move beyond simply finding information that is stated directly in a text.

These cards provide manageable, bite-sized opportunities for children to practise the process of finding a clue → thinking about what it suggests → explaining their inference.

The repeated use of discussion prompts such as “What makes you think that?” and “Which words in the passage helped you work that out?” encourages children to support their ideas with evidence rather than simply guessing.
