For those aged 3 to 8 learning to read, this 2-week CK phonics unit with 4 teaching videos, 34 activities and 3 decodable books provides a complete, carefully sequenced teaching sequence, taking pupils from their first introduction to the CK sound pattern, through phonemic awareness, blending, word reading and spelling, and finally into connected-text reading and fluency.

For pupils aged 8+ requiring catch-up, please see our matching free CK unit here.

It forms part of the Reading Made Simple structured literacy programme, where each new sound or spelling pattern is taught systematically and then applied in reading.

The unit is suitable for use alongside any systematic phonics programme where the pupil has already been taught the necessary prerequisite knowledge, but it is best used in sequence (see below).

Ideal for

  • systematic phonics teaching
  • pupils who need additional practice
  • struggling or dyslexic learners
  • intervention and tutoring
  • home education
  • individual or small-group teaching

The sequence
The activities are designed to take the pupil through the learning process step by step:

Learn the new pattern → Practise → Read words → Build fluency → Read connected text

The two decodable stories come at the end of this sequence, allowing pupils to apply what they have learned in meaningful reading.

What makes this different from a worksheet pack?
The activities are not a collection of unrelated worksheets.
They have been designed to teach and practise one specific phonics pattern, with previously taught patterns and vocabulary continually recycled.

Pupils work with the new pattern through:

phonemic awareness

  • blending
  • segmenting
  • spelling
  • word reading
  • repeated reading
  • fluency practice
  • connected-text reading

The aim is not simply for pupils to recognise CK in a worksheet, but to read CK words accurately and fluently in context.

What’s included?

  • 32 carefully sequenced activities
  • 4 video lessons with review - lessons like the ones I used to teach pupils online
  • 3 sequential decodable reading books
  • word-practice lists before the stories
  • controlled, decodable vocabulary
  • repeated practice with previously taught patterns
  • large, clear print
  • print-ready on A4 pages

The worksheets provide the practice needed to move from learning the pattern to applying it in reading.

You do not need to complete every activity. Select the activities that provide the practice each pupil needs.

Where does it fit in Reading Made Simple?

The CK lesson is the first unit in the first section:

CVC → CCVC/CVCC → CK → OO → EE → SH → CH → ND/NT → NK → TH → NG → ING → AR → OR

Pupils should be able to blend CVC and CCVC/CVCC words before starting this unit.

Low-priced does not = low value: the price is low because every child is entitled to learn to read.

Teach the pattern. Practise it. Read it. Build fluency.
