Short summary
A 74-page, step-by-step workbook for OCR A 2.1.3 Amount of Substance: 12 skills, 120 OCR-style questions, a 50-mark exam paper and full mark schemes.
Description
Every mole calculation is a chain of small skills. This workbook teaches them one at a time, then puts them together in OCR-style exam questions.
Written by an experienced A level chemistry teacher for OCR A H432 / H032, section 2.1.3 and PAG 1.
Each skill follows the same four steps:
• Learn it: the rule, with key words highlighted
• See it: a fully worked example as numbered steps, with visual road maps and calculation chains
• Check it: common mistakes and tips taken from OCR examiners’ reports
• Try it: questions that get harder, ending with “OCR twist” questions modelled on the extra bits OCR adds in real papers
The 12 skills
- Mr and percentage composition by mass
- n = m ÷ M
- The mole and the Avogadro constant (atoms, molecules and ions)
- Empirical and molecular formulae
- Practical: water of crystallisation in copper(II) sulfate (heat to constant mass, PAG 1)
- Finding x, the water of crystallisation
- Gas volumes at RTP
- The ideal gas equation, pV = nRT
- Reacting quantities and limiting reagents
- Percentage yield and atom economy
- Practical: gas volumes, masses and errors (PAG 1)
- Solutions: n = c × V (leads straight into Titrations 1)
Also included
• A Maths toolkit: significant figures, standard form, calculator use and unit conversions
• A 50-mark exam paper (10 multiple choice + 40 marks structured, including a 6-mark extended response)
• Full OCR-style mark schemes with marking points, ALLOW / DO NOT ALLOW and common errors
• A “Where to go next” table that sends students back to the right skill
• A skills tracker (Red / Orange / Green)
Who it is for: Year 12 students learning or revising amount of substance; teachers who want ready-made practice, homework or intervention material; Year 13 students revisiting AS calculations.
