As a starter, pupils complete the quiz. Identifying the different types of pollution (slides 1-8). Alternatively, pupils could guess the top 25 polluting countries of the world - Sporcle quiz.

Discuss the specific environmental challenges faced by the city of Rio, pupils list the problems in a table under the headings: Physical and Human (slides 13-14).

Explore with pupils the three main environmental challenges facing the city of Rio - air pollution, water pollution and waste pollution (slides 15-17). Pupils complete the handout by referring to the information on pages 158-159. Show an example of how their completed handout should look (slide 19). Display extension questions for pupils who complete the handout sheet.

Pupils complete a practice GCSE question for their homework task. Model an example on the board (slide 22).
