Roman Numerals through Asterix Year 4 differentiated

This is a Year 4 lesson on Roman numerals taught through the comic ‘Asterix and the Gaul’. The LO is To read and write Roman Numerals between 1 and 100 (I-100). This is a fun and meaningful lesson taught within the historical context of Roman numerals as indicated by the National Curriculum. I included a detailed lesson plan and differentiated activity sheets.
The activity sheets are differentiated based on ability as follows:

LA and SEN matching cards:
match the Roman soldiers to their shields

MA:
Crack Julius Ceasar’s code by converting between Roman numerals and Arabic numbers
Target buildings: match the Roman numerals with the buildings in the village of Gaul. Convert between Roman numerals-Arabic numbers and order Roman numerals in ascending order

HA:
Magic potion: pupils to double and half the ingredients in Roman numerals (some figures are above 100)

Extension:
Choose a way to discuss the main differences/similarities of the two numerical systems. You can write a paragraph, create a poster, design a Venn diagram, write a poem etc. Make sure you use appropriate mathematical language.
