Slide show story which incorporates the reception maths numbers to 20 objective with an engaging story (literacy) about a scarecrow who clears a stream from bottles and recycles them (science, Geography).

Children can count the bottles (which can be easily resourced in class with recycled bottles) and look at the tools used to get the bottles from the stream (DT). Can they think of others?

A story about friends helping each other. Feelings about the issues which may support RSHE/ PSHE teaching. A solution with painting signs (Art).

Real life photographs mean this story can be enjoyed by all ages and stages of children and could be used in SEND settings.

I developed this resource as have found it hard to find many books for teaching number beyond 10 and engaging the children.

There’s many related lessons from using this book from making scarecrows (DT), collecting and filling bottles, pulling out bottles from water using different tools (Science), writing own signs (literacy) and creating signs (Art). There is ambition language to be explored in the text and key words could be used in phonics.
The maths aspect of working with numbers to 20 and counting could be extended to counting in multiples (2s, 5s and 10s). PSHE/ RSHE can certainly be explored and the real life world issues from pollution and recycling.
