Save the Fish Farm! is a ready-to-teach aquaculture investigation in which students analyse real-world farm data, diagnose a fish-health crisis and design an evidence-based rescue plan.

Students work as aquaculture consultants to investigate why fish in one cage are dying while another cage remains healthy. They interpret water-quality readings, calculate stocking density, analyse dissolved oxygen patterns, examine fish-health evidence and connect multiple causes—including overcrowding, poor water flow, waste, feeding practices and disease.

The 9-page PDF includes:

  • A complete 40-minute lesson plan
  • An illustrated aquaculture case study
  • Farm maps, logbook entries and fish-health evidence
  • Water-quality tables and a 24-hour dissolved oxygen graph
  • Two student answer sheets
  • Stocking-density calculations
  • Diagnosis and rescue-plan activities
  • An optional extension for fast finishers
  • Printable exit tickets
  • A full answer key, marking guidance and misconception notes
  • Differentiation and vocational aquaculture suggestions

The resource is aligned with selected Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science (0697) learning outcomes, but it is also suitable for wider marine science, aquaculture, environmental science, biology and vocational courses. It works well with learners aged approximately 14–16 and can be adapted for older students.

Students need only a pen and calculator. The lesson is designed for groups of 3–4, requires little preparation and can also be completed individually.

Topics include aquaculture, fish farming, stocking density, dissolved oxygen, photosynthesis and respiration, water quality, disease prevention, biosecurity, eutrophication, sustainability and evidence-based decision-making.
