A complete revision and exam practice pack for SB2f Brain and Spinal Cord Problems, covering the full Pearson Edexcel GCSE Biology (9–1) specification for this topic.

This pack contains three components:

Topic Mastery Sheet (PDF) - a comprehensive reference covering non-invasive brain scanning techniques. CT scanning is described: how X-rays taken from multiple angles are reconstructed by a computer to show brain structure, and what it can reveal (tumours, bleeding, dead tissue). PET scanning is described: how a radioactive tracer accumulates in active brain regions, and what it shows (brain activity and function rather than structure). A comparison table sets these two techniques side by side, including the radiation source, what each reveals, and key limitations. Brain tumours are covered - benign versus malignant, how location determines symptoms, and the limitations of treating them by surgery (inoperable positions, risk of damaging surrounding tissue), radiotherapy (damages healthy brain cells), and drug treatment (blood-brain barrier restricts drug access). Spinal cord injuries are covered: why higher injuries cause quadriplegia while lower injuries cause paraplegia, and why CNS neurones cannot regenerate effectively after damage.

Student Exam Practice Sheet (PDF + DOCX) - six exam-style questions covering CT scanning, a CT vs PET comparison, brain tumour symptoms, a 6-mark extended response on treatment limitations, spinal injury levels and outcomes, and why spinal cord injuries are difficult to treat.

Teacher Answer Key (PDF + DOCX) - full mark scheme. The 6-mark answer framework covers all three treatment types and requires specific limitations for each.

Content assessed in Edexcel GCSE Biology Paper 2 (1BI0). Separate science only.
