This purposeful unit for scaling, ratio & proportion includes 5 lessons, and embeds real life scenarios throughout:

Lesson 1 - explores how to keep shapes similar by enlarging or reducing by the same multiplier.

Lesson 2 - focuses on how to apply scale factors to create similar shapes, both on and off coordinate grids.

Lesson 3 - explores how to interpret and create scale drawings through designing blueprints for parks and client bedrooms.

Lesson 4 - focuses on scaling recipes and currencies for hotel guests for consistency.

Lesson 5 - focuses on using and applying ratio and proportion by scaling down the wonders of the world for a pocket museum.

Knowledge:

I know that similarity in geometry means shapes have identical angles and their sides are changed by the same multiplier.

I know that a scale factor describes how much an object has been enlarged or reduced.

I know that proportion involves two ratios that are equivalent, maintaining the same relationship regardless of scale.

Skills:

I can identify similar shapes by calculating the ratio between their corresponding sides.

I can use a scale factor to draw an enlargement of a shape on a grid.

I can apply proportional reasoning to adjust measurements.
