There are three documents included in this resource.

Break the word (represented by an image) into individual sounds.
Shade the boxes while you are orally carrying out this process.
Alternatively, sounds can be written into the boxes if completing this task independently.

The first document has the correct number of boxes for the number of sounds. This scaffolding will help the child to recognise if their segmenting has been accurate or if they need to double check.

The second or third documents include too many boxes for the number of sounds in many of words (or the right number in some cases). The child therefore has less scaffolding while completing the process.
