Semana Santa: KS3 Spanish Easter Lesson
Floats carried by forty people who can’t see where they’re going, giant tronos weighing over five tonnes, and processions so silent you only hear the drums. This complete, ready-to-teach lesson takes Year 7–8 students to Semana Santa in Sevilla, Málaga and Castilla. They use it to practise giving opinions with gusta and gustan. It’s colourful, fits a one-hour lesson with 5 minutes to spare, and includes guidance for teaching a religious festival sensitively.
What’s included
• 6-page full-colour student worksheet (A4)
• 17-slide editable PowerPoint with timers, answer slides and teacher notes on every slide
• Separate teacher answer sheet with a minute-by-minute lesson plan
• One-page vocab mat (procession words, food, opinions and adjectives), ready for desks or homework
The lesson (55 minutes)
• Do Now (4 min): match six key words.
• Reading (14 min): Sevilla, Málaga, Valladolid and Zamora, plus torrijas and the mona de Pascua. Students then match each sentence to the right city, answer questions and find the Spanish words in the texts.
• Grammar (10 min): gusta or gustan, encanta(n) and interesa(n), with porque es / son and adjectives that agree.
• Compare (12 min): a short text in Spanish about Easter in the UK, a Spain vs UK table, and comparisons with mientras que and en cambio.
• Write (12 min): an opinion blog about Semana Santa.
• Exit ticket (3 min).
Why teachers like it
• Works on its own, with no prior knowledge needed. Perfect before the Easter holidays.
• Treats the festival as culture: students give opinions on traditions, not beliefs.
• The vocab mat supports weaker students and EAL learners in class, and doubles as a revision homework.
• The answers are in a separate file, so you can print the worksheet without them.
