Shark Subtraction Hands-On Maths Activity

Make subtraction fun and engaging with this hands-on Shark Subtraction activity, designed to support young learners as they develop their early maths skills.

Children use the cut-out fish to physically take away from the shark, helping them to understand subtraction in a practical, visual and engaging way.

This resource includes shark subtraction mats and a selection of fish for children to cut out and use alongside the subtraction activities. The pages can be printed, cut and stuck directly into children’s work, or laminated for repeated use.

For a reusable activity, simply laminate the shark mats and fish. The fish can then be attached using Velcro dots or another reusable adhesive, allowing children to physically move the fish as they solve each subtraction problem.

This resource is ideal for Reception and Year 1 and can be used during whole-class teaching, small-group work, maths interventions, continuous provision or independent learning.

A fun and practical way to introduce and reinforce the concept of subtraction through an engaging under-the-sea theme.
