Fractions, Decimals & Percentages | Whole Unit | Lesson Notes, Slides & Activities

This purposeful unit for **fractions, decimals and percentages** includes 8 lessons, and embeds real life scenarios and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) throughout: **Lesson 1** - explores how to simplify fractions and why, related to highest common factors (HCFs). **Lesson 2** - focuses on how to compare fractions by using multiples to find the common denominator, and why. **Lesson 3** - identifies the purpose and precision of thousandths in decimal and fraction form. **Lesson 4** - illustrates the purpose of percentages and how they relate to fractions and decimals (FDP) using 100 grids. **Lesson 5** - investigates the equivalence of key benchmark fractions, decimals and percentages (FDP) using 100 grids and their purpose in everyday life. **Lesson 6** - focuses on how to convert fractions into percentages, and decimals by converting denominators into 100 first **Lesson 7** - uncovers how to compare fractions, decimals and percentages (FDP) by converting them and mapping them on a number line. **Lesson 8** - gives students the opportunity to apply their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages (FDP) to interpret data related to the sustainable development goal of ending poverty (SDG 1). **Knowledge:** I know that fractions, decimals, and percentages are just different languages for the same value. I know that percent means "parts per hundred." I know the value of digits up to three decimal places (tenths, hundredths, and thousandths). I know that multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number keeps the fraction's value equal. **Skills:** I can simplify a fraction into its smallest form by finding common factors. I can find a common denominator so I can compare two different fractions. I can convert a fraction into a percentage by scaling it to a denominator of 100. I can order a mix of fractions, decimals, and percentages on a number line. **What’s Included?** Your download includes everything you need for a successful series of lessons: **Unit Overview Notes:** Outlines the knowledge, skills, and pre-requisites for the entire unit, exploring the question 'Can the same value look different?' **Detailed Lesson Walkthrough/Notes:** Includes a step-by-step guide with guiding questions and key discussion points for each lesson. **Guiding Questions:** Great opportunities for AfL throughout each lesson, designed to help your students draw on their previous learning and make purposeful connections across the unit. **Lesson Slides:** Engaging slides to guide each of your lessons. **Lesson Activities:** Includes accessible, low-floor high ceiling activities for each lesson that all students can access through adaptive teaching, leading to improved confidence.
