This lesson explores how and when to simplify ratios through using common factors and real life scenarios - perfect for helping your students develop their understanding of ratio through clear explanations, thought-provoking challenges, and engaging real life scenarios!

Knowledge and Skills Covered:

Knowledge:

I know that multiplicative relationships are used to find equivalent ratios. In this lesson, we focus on using division to scale ratios down to their simplest form.

I know that a ratio compares the size of one part to another part. In this lesson, we ensure that even when numbers change through simplification, the relative size between parts remains constant.

Skills:

I can simplify ratios to their lowest terms by finding common factors. In this lesson, we focus on identifying the highest common factor (HCF) to reach the simplest form in one step.

I can use a bar model to solve problems where I am given the total quantity or the value of just one part. In this lesson, we use bar models to prove that a ratio like 10:20 represents the same relationship as 1:2.
