Let’s become little scientists!
This fun Sink or Float activity, with an answer sheet included, gives young learners the opportunity to make predictions, test their ideas, and discover which everyday objects sink and which float.
First, Do the Experiment!
Before completing the worksheet, let the children get hands-on and test the objects in water. Ask them to predict:
“Do you think it will sink or float?”
Then place each object into the water and watch what happens! Encourage children to use simple language such as:
“It sinks!”
“It floats!”
Most of the objects needed for the experiment are easy to find in a kindergarten or early primary classroom, making this a simple and low-preparation science activity.
Then, Do the Worksheet!
Once the children have completed their experiment, give them the Sink or Float sorting worksheet. Children cut out the pictures and glue each object into the correct Sink or Float column.
This gives them a chance to review what they discovered during the experiment while also practicing:
• Making predictions and observations
• Exploring basic science concepts
• Using simple science vocabulary
• Cutting and gluing
• Sorting and classifying
Experiment first → worksheet second!
A fun, hands-on way to turn your classroom into a little science lab and help young learners discover that science is all around them!
