Sir Cumference and the Roundabout Battle - Maths Storybook Lesson for UKS2

Want to consolidate learning on rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand and hundred thousand in a fun and engaging way? Learning about rounding and why it can be useful is made interesting and entertaining through the fun Maths adventure book “Sir Cumference and the Roundabout Battle” by Cindy Neuschwander.

A fun, practical fusion of reading comprehension and Maths, the children will be super engaged with this lovely book and accompanying lesson. The practical activity has a real-world sense of purpose as the children are tasked with estimating supplies for an upcoming battle quickly and efficiently by using their rounding skills - to the nearest 10, 100, 1 000, 10 000 and 100 000.

The lesson focuses on rounding as per the book, but there is also an additional benefit of practising counting in multiples of 25/100/1000. Please note there is some preparation needed for this lesson to put bundles of resources together for counting/rounding e.g. packs of feathers labelled as 10,000 (it doesn’t need to that many, but so the children can quickly count in multiples of 10,000 and then round to the nearest 100,000 etc).
