Want to extend your students’ understanding of coordinates to working with the four quadrants using a math read-aloud? This lesson with supporting resources for the 5th / 6th grade, accompanies the Maths picture book ‘Sir Cumference and the Viking’s Map’ by Cindy Neuschwander, and looks at finding and plotting coordinates using the four quadrants.

A fun, practical fusion of reading comprehension, Viking history and Maths, the children will be super engaged with this hands-on and practical investigation into using coordinates in the four quadrants. A fun activity where students graph ‘viking treasure’ on a coordinate plane for their classmates to find on a huge PE-cone grid; this lesson also gives the opportunity to extend learning outside of the classroom and get coordinates ‘up on their feet’.

This pack contains:

  • Detailed Maths lesson plan
  • Teaching Input Powerpoint (9 slides)
  • Answer Key included for teaching input
  • Recording sheet template for main activity

Additional resources needed:

  • The book ‘Sir Cumference and the Viking’s Map’ by Cindy Neuschwander (FYI there are YouTube readings if budget is low!)
  • PE cones
